We traveled to Africa on Safari in search of wild and exotic animals that are the stuff of dreams and legends and literature. We found there--on a continent so far away--not only the most amazing and photogenic animals, but also magical landscapes--vast and hauntingly beautiful--and a people--the people of Africa--who were unfailingly warm and kind, courageous and hopeful.


Several years ago, my wife and I had the great fortune to spend two-plus weeks in East Africa--in Kenya and Tanzania. It was an extraordinary experience--an absolutely incredible vacation. We traveled with a tour group of 29 terrific individuals of varying ages, interests, and backgrounds. All of us were so excited to experience Africa--its animals, its landscapes, its culture, its people. Our ten game drives--in the Lake Manyara National Park, in the wondrous Ngorongoro Crater, in Amboseli, in the vast Serengeti, in the awe-inspiring Masai Mara showed us--often up close and personal--not only the "big five" (lion, leopard, elephant, Cape buffalo, black rhinoceros) but scores of other impressive animals, as well. Yet our visits to an African elementary school, a Tanzanian market, an art and cultural center, the Olduvai Gorge, a Masai Village, an animal orphanage, a women's self-help project for spinners and weavers--all of these helped us to understand and appreciate the African people, their culture, and their heritage.


What you see here are some of the best of the more than 11,500 photos which I was privileged to take over the last few weeks. Most are photos of awe-inspiring animals, but some are of the amazing PEOPLE of Africa, their lives and their joys and their smiles; their green and golden landscapes, their solitary acacia trees and colossal baobab trees standing strikingly against a brilliant pink or orange sky as the sun sets.
